U.S. Farmland under Threat of Urbanization: Future Development Scenarios to 2040

چکیده
Urbanization imperils agriculture by converting farmland into uncultivable impervious surfaces and other uses that limit land productivity. Despite the considerable loss of productive croplands due to historic urbanization in United States, little is known about locations magnitudes extant agricultural still under threat future urban expansion. In this study, we developed a spatially explicit machine learning-based method predict development through 2040 business-as-usual scenario explored its occurrence on existing farmland. We found if continues at same pace as between 2001 2016, 2040, highly areas low-density residential will increase 9.5 21 million acres, respectively. This would result 18 acres lost, fragmented, or compromised (~2% total lands 2016), with remainder projected occurring types natural semi-natural lands. Of affected lands, 6.2 (34%) be converted 12 (66%) uses. Agricultural losses are greatest fast-growing regions such Texas, California, Southeast, outskirts metropolitan across country, especially Midwest, where more concentrated. The percentage highest along East Coast, many forecasted expand onto limited remaining pool cultivable These findings can help guide efforts local, state, federal policymakers reduce use competition systems mitigate impacts

متن کاملProbable Scenarios of Future Ethics
Life in today's global village has two ontological and epistemological aspects. One problem of the globalized world related to these two aspects, which will be discussed in this article first is the fact that the civilization of the globalized world has, in some ways, been disconnected from its culture, since civilization moves towards collectivism whereas culture moves towards ind...
متن کاملAnalyzing the Impact of Highways Associated with Farmland Loss under Rapid Urbanization
Highway construction has accelerated urban growth and induced direct and indirect changes to land use. Although many studies have analyzed the relationship between highway construction and local development, relatively less attention has been paid to clarifying the various impacts of highways associated with farmland loss. This paper integrates GIS spatial analysis, remote sensing, buffer analy...
متن کاملStudy of Current and Future Meteorological Drought Conditions using the CMIP5 Model Under RCP scenarios
Reducing or increasing the climate parameters such as temperature and rainfall as a result of the climate change process, causes a variety of droughts. In this study, the effect of climate change on meteorological drought in Yazd province is investigated. For this purpose, the drought time series were determined in two historical periods (1961-2005) and the future (2017-2100) by SPI and SPEI. H...
متن کاملModeling Current and Future Potential Distributions of Caspian Pond Turtle (Mauremys caspica) under Climate Change Scenarios
Although turtles are the most threatened taxonomic group within the reptile class, we have a very limited understanding of how turtles respond to climate change. Here, we evaluated the effects of climate changes on the geographical distribution of Caspian pond turtle (Mauremys caspica). We used an ensemble approach by combining six species distribution models including artificial neural network...
